all of whom defended PhD dissertations this year. Amanda Minks
will be teaching anthropology in the Honors College of the
University of Oklahoma next year; David Novak will be teaching
ethnomusicology at Sarah Lawrence College.

PhD program have won numerous competitive dissertation research
fellowships this year, including two International Dissertation
Research Fellowships from the Social Science Research
Council (our 5th and 6th SSRC awards since 2002),
Fulbright-IIE and Fulbright-Hays fellowships (our 6th
and 7th since 2002), a Wenner-Gren Foundation
Dissertation Improvement Fellowship (our second since 2002),
an IREX Eastern European Studies Fellowship,
two full-year and one summer FLAS (Foreign
